SIP vs TCP/IP Intercoms

The benefits offered by IP intercom systems, compared to traditional analog systems, are now universally recognized: The most important being the reduction of costs andย  installation times that you can get by being able to share the existing network with other systems.

The possible architectures for such systems are based on the adoption of a SIP protocol (Session Initiation Protocol) or on the adoption of a TCP/IP P2P protocol (Peer to Peer); the first is the protocol used by most part of the telephone exchanges, such as the popular Asterix, while the second is the one used in the exchange of files and the direct communication between computers such as Skype.

With the rollout of NBN many of the intercom systems available in the market today use a client-server architecture that uses the SIP protocol for communications management. These systems require a SIP server, the SIP server takes care of managing the communication between different clients, i.e. the connection request of a client to another is addressed to the server and the serverย  enables the communication between the two terminals.

Integration of SIP Intercom with Telephone Services :ย SIP based intercoms allow integration of telephone services i.e. enabling the devices to call multiple devices/ phones or groups of devices/ phones one after another and also make calls to mobile phones or external numbers which can be very beneficial. Integration of SIP Intercom and Telephones allows dual use of devices โ€“ you can answer and make Intercom and Telephone calls from the same device unlike traditional systems where Intercom and Telephone systems were separate units. This reduces hardware, cabling and installation costs. Intercom calls can also be forwarded to mobiles or remote phones.

TCP/IP P2P intercoms use a server-less structure that is based on the adoption of a P2P communication protocols where each device, called Peer, has the ability to connect itself directly with the device with which it must communicate without the intervention of any intermediate deviceย  like the server.This is possible because each device directly and independently performs the initialization function of the connection, which in SIP systems is performed by the server.
